Il Basso is a work of art that was no overnight success. For many years the owners have been refining and renovating this spacious rental into its present state: a classic Tuscan countryside residence. It has fabulous views looking west from Lucca looking on toward the mountains that separate Lucca from Puccini's Lake (Lago Massaciuccoli). On a good day views of the sea, Livorno and the small islands that rest off shore are in view. On all days the Wysteria covered pergola for al fresco dining and the interior rooms of the rental are always popular. Il Basso is furnished with period Tuscan country antiques mixed with tasteful and very comfortable furnishings. Beds, chairs, tables, sofas - all are equal to the style of an owner with a good eye for design and taste. It is a classic country design attached to other houses in a small borgo style.
Maid service is included only for 3 hours / day, 2 days a week. There is also a non intrusive gardener taking care of the grounds. Milvia (maid, cook) is available by prior request (for meals/extra maid service). Please arrange ahead with us if interested in these additional services .

I just wanted to thank you for all of your assistance with our stay at Il Basso. I felt I needed to report back to you some of the glorious details. First...thanks for the tip on the minivan..the bigger van would not have made it up the steep road...Second....had a great time. Good location for touring too.

Everything went every well. It was a most enjoyable vacation.

Very comfortable and roomy. The maid did not stay and clean the first day..although we had slept late and she probably did not want to disturb us. She was very kind and did a geat job the other two days.
The location and view were marvelous; it was near many sights we wanted to see.
Owner was very gracious as we lost all water the first morning after our arrival. He and his son who greeted us when arrived late came and took care of the problem with in a relatively short time. The dinner upon arrival was good. I thought the villa was lovely, other than the lack of everyday supplies...but that's how villas work.
Local Resuarants: We enjoyed Il Borghetta and La costa de vini. Many others in Lucca and surrounding areas.

Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
