La Cappella

From The Heavens To The Hillside

La Cappella is stretched over a ridge of the San Martino hills as it looks out over the Lucca valley. Its history is spiritual - Cappella was built 1700's - 1800's and served as a convent until the late 20th century. Now in the hands of a talented architect, the renovation and expansion of La Cappella is an exercise of excellence in space, furnishings and interior details honoring its history and views...and great views they are. This place is professionally run and every bedroom is ensuite. La Cappella can sleep a total of 18 people. There are three self catering apartments upstairs sleeping 10 and downstairs the "villa" sleeps eight.

Perfect for: Large groups.

The Details:

The villa (sleeps 8) - stretches over the length of the old convent and is on two floors. A long hallway with wood floors has the bedrooms a double and another with twin beds) located along this hallway - every bedroom has a full bathroom with shower - and the owner did a particularly good job in furnishing. At the far end of the rental is the living room....a fabulous living room that has a pizza oven. It is enormous, about 100 square meters with about ten large windows lining three walls. Light pours into the space and views dazzle the eyes. The ceiling is all wooden beams not unlike a lodge in Montana's Tetons and a fireplace complements this thought. Really special this one. There is a wide spiral stair that descends to the kitchen/dining room that spreads over about 75 square meters. Big space, nice renovation, tasteful furnishings and fabulous views.

Crazy Land Apartment (sleeps 4) - 1 double bed room with shower room. 1 twin bedded room with shower room. Large living room with extra sofa bed that sleeps 2 people, an american style kitchen. As tasteful as the villa and providing independent privacy from the other groups.

Red Hill Apartment (sleeps 4) - 1 double bed room with shower room. 1 twin bedded room with shower room. Large living room with extra sofa bed that sleeps 2 people, american style kitchen. As tasteful as the villa and providing independent privacy from the other groups.

Roccolo Apartment (sleeps 2) - 1 double bed room with fire place. Living room with extra sofa bed for 2 people, american style kitchen. Full bathroom with shower. As tasteful as the villa and providing independent privacy from the other groups.

Although I have been here on several occasion inspecting the property and showing travel agents, it always strikes me how very professional, well kept, clean and satisfying this place is. For a group looking for that "hotel" experience, La Cappella is unbeatable.

A Little on the Region
Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
