La Margherita

18th Century and Still Going Strong

Region: Tuscany North SubrCasa Margherita is an independent stone house dating back to the 18th century. It's located on a large family estate, with the main villa on the property. The main villa, where the present owners live permanently, is an architectural style unique to Lucca, but with a twist. It is like half-villa. The old Lucchese nobility which started to build the villa in 1700, at a certain point - and we do not know why, decided to abandon this villa to build another one not far away. They left the first building unfinished. In fact the present villa is like a half-villa. The right wing was finished and decorated with the typical 1700 fresco painted decorations, while the left wing completely unfinished! Weird, no? Hey, when you have the money who cares? The present owners have restored all the property with care and attention to details, located down it's cypress lined road. In Casa Margherita they fully respected the old characteristics of the building and used all the original stones and bricks, as well as terra cotta tiles and wood beams, maintaining the old charm, while adding all the modern appliances. Inside the house it is nicely decorated with Tuscan country period pieces of furniture, and lovely fabrics. The atmosphere is very warm and pleasant and guests enjoy a lovely pool with great views on the hilly countryside covered with vineyards, and olive groves. It makes for a nice countryside stay and, thereÕs a pool!

What Guests Have To Say

The villa had a great patio area covered with grape vines; a wonderful place to relax in the afternoon after sightseeing. The bedrooms were fine with beds that welcomed us to a great night's rest. Although 4 miles above Lucca, the location was close enough to restaurants, stores, and many other areas to visit. The views from the villa were spectacular! We could see across the area with vineyards, cypress tress, and rolling hills. The view at night with all of the lights was also wonderful. Martzia welcomed us in a very warm way. Although she spoke limited English, she was able to communicate to us regarding the area.

A Little on the Region
Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
