La Palazzina

The Little Palace

La Palazzina is actually a large apartment (two floors worth) on one side of a substantial villa estate. There are other apartments in the building, all of which have a separate apartment - all apartments have their own entrance. Privacy dear reader, privacy. There used to be a tenor singer in one of the apartments, we think he is gone now - maybe not. But it has been years that we have represented this place. And he was there years ago. Like everything great in Italy, this place is old but the interior is kept so that you would never know: furnished with comfortable sofas, chairs and beds while the decorations reflect that charming Italian antiquity we travel so far to embrace. The front entranceway is charming alone, and the gate to the property is nothing less than impressive. But the benefits do not stop there. The property, protected by the Italian Government Bureau of Historic Properties (talk about bureaucracy!), is some 50,000 square meters, has a small lake, extremely old trees and lots of flowers. You can enjoy every little hidden corner on this property, courtesy of the Italian Government. There are dogs on the property - Italians love dogs. Additionally there is a large classic chapel, and another large villa on the property at about 50 meters away that is used for business and social meetings, mostly on the weekend.

As Americans almost everything we have is new. The villa was like staying with grandmother in the country. The antiquity to us only added to the comfort. Just like out of a novel!!!!!!! Absolute perfection, the only drawback is honking cars as people round the corners, as the roads are one-way and small. Typical thourhout Italy. Marina ,the owner could not have been nicer. She even stocked our kitchen with coffee, cream and pastries for our first morning. She also arranged for a doctor and helped with anything we needed. One of the most delightful things at the villa is the wonderful tenant in back. She is Scottish and worked for the US Embassy in Rome. Her name is Maria, at 90 years of age she seems more like 50!!!!

We could not have asked for a more beautiful house, a nicer view, a great balcony, a tremendous area and most of all a great location. We all loved staying at La Pallazina. My mom and dad called this vacation the most enjoyable time they have ever experienced. The price was unbeatable. We will contact you again and I would highly recommend you to anyone needing a villa.

Beautiful park setting...enjoyed walking around the property, as well as playing catch, etc, with our kids. They were wonderful! Welcomed us to their home, also on the property, for wine and hors d'oeuvres one evening and gave us (including our 3 kids) a tour of their family villa---amazing! A year-round tenant on the property also invited us to join her 4th of July picnic with her American friends from the area! Our kids enjoyed joining in a little parade with the others!

Firm mattresses, very nice linens. Dishwasher was a nice surprise. Bugs were somewhat of a nuisance at night, but we knew in advance that there were no screens. Very, very nice. The villa seems isolated but is actually very close to supermarket, restaurants and to Lucca. Glorious. Helpful when needed and not intruisive. Pleasant to deal with. We happened to be there during the biggest heat wave in 250 years, but the villa remained comfortable almost all the time. Local Resuarants: Mecenate - within walking distance

A Little on the Region
Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
