Villa Chiara is a wonderful country villa located down a wee lane in the hills east and slightly south of Pisa. This is a classic 19th century villa. Now completely restored it is an elegant and totally cozy rental with lots of room for 11 people. Located outside of Cevoli Villa Chiara sits in the "Pisa Villa District" where the noble families from Pisa presided over large parcels of land and farm estates, built their villas as summer residences and generally had a good time eating food and drinking wine. We love this place. It is gorgeuous inside, and the views are fabulous too. Like we said, the house has been completely restored maintaining that long sought charm ...no strike that...elegance of an old noble residence, yet equipped with all the modern stuff we can't do without. The rooms are decorated tastefully, antique pieces of family furniture, elegant Lucchese fabrics. The owner has spread her elegant taste in each room, taking care of so many details it would make you dizzy. All for you dear reader. A cook is available to prepare delicious dinners in the large traditional Tuscan country kitchen.
In the immediate area there are several medieval towns to check out, like Cevoli adjacent to the villa, Lari (4 minute walk) with its magnificent castle, and many others. You can see some of this antiquity from your rental over the fabulous views.

I didn't have a chance to see this until recently, as I tursted Luisa in her recommendation. WOW is about all I need to say. Love it, the village and the views.

Cevoli is a small village with the essentials, but here you are not far from restaurants and such. There are two restaurants that we enjoyed often. One was in Fauglia (the only restaurant there) and the other was about 8-10 minutes away and was called Tremolete. It was run by Sergio and his family, all of whom were very welcoming. Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
