Villa Montegrande

Still Belongs To The Mansi Family - That's Historic

We love this area. Villa Montegrande is historic and still remains in the original Mansi family's hands. That's right (for those of you that know) the Mansi family. The most powerful of all the Lucca families. In the centre of Lucca it is possible to visit and admire the town palace of the family, converted into a museum- Palazzo Mansi Museum- with the original decoration of the palace. In the old days Villa Montegrande was a manor house of a very big estate with various other villas and farmhouses on the spread running the families farming affairs. The villa is dating back to 1600 and 1700, with the typical outside double flights of stairs leading up to the main floor. It has been restored through centuries always maintaining its elegance and charm. The owner, a very nice enthusiastic lady, has maintained the old charm while introducing elegant architectural elements, details and facilities for you, dear reader. World class elegance and cool charm, salon (as if!), sitting room (see?), studio (of course!), hydromassage (ooh-la-la), large living room (sit a spell), dining room (ya gotta eat), kitchen (cooking optional), surrounded by heaven.

It is surrounded by lush green hills, woods and olive groves. Also there is an annex (a barn that sleeps 4 at an additional price) which has been very carefully restored with some cool, modern architectural touches like a glass wall. Still with the atmosphere and charm of an old farming stone building. Villa Montegrande is a great place for an unforgettable vacation in a peaceful charming setting.

A Little on the Region
Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
