Villa Ortensia is a classic Lucchese villa - stately and tall, austere on the outside and furnished with an elegant comfort inside. It's interior is spacious and rather regal in demeanor. Along with the pool, and small staff - well, this is what we have in mind when taking a nice long and leisurely villa in the Tuscan countryside. it has all the amenities and comforts you seek when getting away from it all. Yet here you have a feeling of what it was like in the "good ol' days." Comfort in sitting and among the trappings of the nobile 1800's.
This region of Lucca is known for its stunning villas from the days some 300 years earlier when the merchant class bought and worked the fertile fields of the Lucca valley. Sometimes the villas were in the hills, sometimes in the valley. This one is a little between - not way up in the hills, but high enough to provide some nice views of the valley and hills over yonder. Villa Ortensia easily sleeps 12. It has six bedrooms and each have a bathroom, as it should be. NOTE: there is a sharp bend in the final paved road leading up here. A small bus can not make it. Cars, vans? Not a problem.

Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
