Villa Veronica, is yet another fabulous place near Lucca. What is it about these Lucca people from yester-year? Where did they get all that money and style? And they all built their places in these fabulous locations. So is the case for Villa Veronica. Beautiful and in a panoramic position high on a hill overlooking the great plain of Lucca, the rolling hills over yonder to the far away mountains separating the sea. It's darn right poetic. The villa dates back to those good ol' times of 1600, when the estate was composed of the villa (YOURS) and several farm houses where the farming people used to live on one floor and the animals on another. In the front lawn, in front of the house are the big stone wheels used for oil pressing. Don't worry the villa has been carefully restored by the present owners maintaining the old structure and atmosphere we all look for in arrival. It is decorated with period antiques and comfy pieces of furniture, canopied beds, and marble bathrooms combining old style with modern comfort.
This villa (circa 1600) overlooks the whole Lucca plain with views of the plain, olive groves, beyond the mountains, down to the sea (depending on the weather of course!).

Ponte a Moriano is a decent sized village with a round up of your usual suspects - grocery shops, large supermarket, bars, pizzeria, restaurant, pastry shops, ice cream maker, bank, pharmacy and post office. What more could you want, I ask you? Just east and north of Pisa through the mountain is the intriguing walled city of Lucca. The walls are the most substantial of all of Italy. Where most walled cities erected high and thin walls some 1 - 2 meters thick, Lucca created a massive moat and walls of some 20 meters thick. Large enough that it now serves as a wonderful promenade for the village people. This is a must - be in Lucca at the time of the "passeggiata" 5:00 - 7:00pm. The town strolls leisurely around the city on top of the wall and along the historic street that encircles the oval piazza anfiteatro, once the location of an oval Roman amphitheater. Julius Ceaser is said to have walked this passeggiata in 85 BC. "Passeggiate" is a delightful Italian custom. All towns and villages have one and allow the informed traveler, to rub elbows with the locals.
